WHO WE ARE
-
Our Purpose & Vision
We started this business because Ugandan coffee deserves to be seen, tasted, and valued for what it truly is — one of the world’s most remarkable coffees, grown by hardworking farmers whose stories rarely reach the global stage. For generations, coffee has been part of our culture, our ceremonies, and our livelihoods, yet the people behind it often receive the least recognition. We want to change that.
Our vision is to build a coffee brand that connects the world directly to the farms, families, and traditions that make Ugandan coffee unique. By focusing on quality, transparency, and fair partnerships with smallholder farmers, we aim to create a supply chain where everyone benefits — from the grower to the final cup.
This business is not just about selling beans; it’s about elevating Uganda’s reputation in the global coffee industry, empowering rural communities, and showcasing the rich flavors and heritage that define our coffee. We see a future where Ugandan coffee stands proudly among the world’s finest origins, known not only for its taste but for the integrity and humanity behind it. -
The History of Ugandan Coffee
Ugandan’s coffee story is one of the most distinctive in Africa - shaped by indigenous coffee, specifically Coffea Canephora (Robusta), which grows wild around Lake Victoria.
Long before commercial farming, coffee cherries were used culturally - chewed during ceremonies, rituals, and social gatherings in the kingdom of Buganda, Bunyoro, and Ankole.
By the 18th century, coffee played a role in traditional ceremonies and marriage rituals. However, it soon became tied to regional trade systems, including those influenced by slavery and early forms of colonial control.
Around 1900, Arabica coffee was intorduced from Malawi and Ethiopia.
The first major Arabica-growing area was Entebbe, where the British colonial administration was based.
Colonial policies expanded coffee as cash crop, setting the foundation for Uganda’s export economy.
By the late 20th century, coffee had become Uganda’s top-earning export crop.
In 1989, Uganda exceeded its production of coffee through political instability and smuggling, which reduced official export volumes.
Today, Uganda remains a major global producer, especially of Robusta, which is naturally suited to its climate and soils.
Arabica production has grown in regions like Mount Elgon and the Rwenzori Mountains, adding specialty-grade diversity.
Coffee today, remains central to Uganda’s economy and ritual livelihoods.

Arabica vs. Robusta
Arabica and Robusta dominate global coffee production, but they differ in ways that matter for taste, caffeine, farming, and price.
Key Differences Between Arabica & Robusta:
Plant & Growing Conditions
Arabica grows best at high altitudes with cooler, stable climates. It is more delicate and vulnerable to pests and diseases.
Robusta thrives at lower elevations, tolerates heat, and is far more disease-resistant, making it easier and cheaper to cultivate.
Flavour Profile
Arabica is known for its smooth, complex flavours - often fruity, floral, or sweet - with higher acidity.
Robusta tends to be stronger, more bitter, and earthier, with a heavier body and less acidity.
Caffeine Content
Robusta contains nearly double the caffeine of Arabica.
This higher caffeine contributes to it’s harsher, more bitter taste.
Price & Marker Share
Arabica accounts for about 60-70% of global production and is generally more expensive due to it’s delicate growing requirements.
Robusta makes up 30-40% of production and is typically cheaper and used in espresso blends or instant coffee.
Bean Characteristics
Arabica beans are more oval with a curved crease.
Robusta beans are rounder with a straight crease.

Why Ugandan Coffee Stands Out
Ugandan coffee has a compelling mix of natural advantages, cultural depth, and flavour diversity that makes it stand out on the global stage.
Exceptional Growing Conditions
Uganda sits along the equator with a tropical climate ideal for coffee cultivation.
Key regions like Mount Elgon, The Rwenzori Mountains, and The Lake Victoria basin offer high altitudes, abundant rainfall, and nutrient-rich volcanic or alluvial soils - all of which contribute to complex, high-quality flavour profiles.
Distinctive Flavour Profiles
Uganda produces both native Robusta and high-quality Arabica, giving it a wide flavour spectrum.
Arabica from mountains regions tends to be bright, fruity, and aromatic, while Ugandan Robusta is known for it’s bold body and natural sweetness.
Many experts note that Uganda’s coffees rival more famous African origins but remain underrated.
Sustainability & Community-Driven Farming
Coffee farming in Uganda is deeply tied to smallholder communities, often passed down through generations.
Sustainable farming practices and community-based production contribute to both quality and ethical sourcing.
Rising Global Recognition
Uganda is Africa’s largest exporter of Robusta and is gaining international attention for it’s specialty Arabica.
As global demand grows, more roasters are turning to Uganda for unique, high-quality beans.
Nutrient-Rich & Naturally Flavourful
Ugandan coffee is noted for it’s bold flavours, inviting aroma, and even notably mineral content - a result of the country’s fertile volcanic soils and climate.
